Technical overview

The ModCon is a passive mode controller: a length of specially prepared multimode fiber in a sealed housing that redistributes the modal power of whatever source is connected to it. Because the output modal distribution is set by the device rather than by the source, an LED, VCSEL or FP laser test set all launch the same mode distribution into the fiber under test. Every unit is tested on Arden's MPX Modal Explorer to confirm the output meets the standard irrespective of the input distribution. The aerospace version is specified by the width of the Near Field Pattern at the 5%, 15% and 75% intensity levels rather than by Encircled Flux, and is supplied in a Eurocard case for 50/125 um or 62.5/125 um graded index fiber with FC, ST, SC or LC connectors. 70/70% Limited Phase Space versions are also available, where the Near Field Width at the 5% level is 70% of the nominal core diameter.
