Mode field diameter (MFD) and effective area (Aeff) measurement system using far-field scanning, aimed at large effective area and high-NA single-mode fibers.

The MA500 measures MFD by the far-field scan reference test method described in the IEC standards, using a wide-angle scanner plus a high-resolution scan mode. PFO positions the wide-angle scan for small-MFD fibers such as dispersion-compensating fiber and the high-resolution scan for ultra-large effective area (ULEAF) fiber. Light source configuration is flexible: an internal laser of up to four wavelengths, or an external fixed-wavelength or tuneable source, with an optional external input that includes source modulation/chopping. Effective area is derived as part of the MFD measurement.
