No-Power Oscillating Sensor

A wireless, fully passive RF sensing unit that converts an analog voltage amplitude into a frequency-modulated RF signal, for unattended measurement in harsh or contested environments. This is an RF/RFID device, not a fiber optic sensor.

Technical overview

The device uses an RFID sensor as a frequency-modulated transmitter of analog voltage amplitude, with tuned polymer derived ceramics (PDC) serving as the capacitive dielectric and the transduction mechanism. A voltage controlled oscillator allows different analog front ends such as thermocouples, voltage or pressure sensors to feed the same transmitter. It is self-powered and requires no battery or wiring. CEL publishes no frequency, read range, accuracy or operating temperature figures for this device. It is covered by US Patent 11,522,267 B2 and was developed with US Department of Energy support under Contract DE-AC07-05-ID14517.
